The Miyawaki Method in Urban India

ree

In the heart of Bengaluru, a once barren patch of land has blossomed into a lush, vibrant forest—all thanks to the Miyawaki method. This Japanese technique, now gaining popularity across India, is transforming forgotten spaces into dense, green havens in no time. Cities like Bengaluru and Chennai are leading the way with projects like "Bangalore's Miyawaki Forest" and the “Miyawaki Green Project,” turning vacant plots, railway tracks, and even school campuses into thriving greenery. By planting native species close together, the method helps them grow quickly, boosts biodiversity, and strengthens the environment. These urban forests are improving air quality, cooling down cities, and creating homes for wildlife.

How to Replicate the Miyawaki Method in Your Area

  1. Choose the Location

Find an underutilized space like a schoolyard, community park, or vacant plot.

  2. Gather Volunteers and Partner with Experts

Rally friends, classmates, and community members to help with planting and maintenance. Reach out to environmental organizations for guidance on native plants and the Miyawaki method.

  3. Prepare the Land and Select Native Plants

Clear the area of weeds and debris, then prepare planting holes. Choose a mix of native species that thrive in your climate.

  4. Plant and Maintain

Plant trees, shrubs, and ground cover close together in layers that support each other’s growth. Water the plants regularly and organize follow-up sessions to ensure their care and growth.

Cleaning Up the Coastline: Mumbai’s Versova Beach Revival

ree

Versova Beach in Mumbai, once overwhelmed with plastic waste, became the centre of a remarkable environmental turnaround thanks to Afroz Shah, a lawyer turned environmental activist. What started as a simple idea, cleaning up the beach turned into a game-changing movement. Every weekend, Afroz and a growing group of volunteers gathered to pick up plastic, bottles, and other waste that had been dumped on the shoreline for years. Over time, their consistent efforts led to the removal of over 9 million kilograms of trash. This wasn’t just about cleaning; it was about giving the beach back to nature. As the garbage disappeared, marine life began to return, and the once-polluted area transformed into a beautiful, clean space for both locals and wildlife.

How to Lead Your Community Cleanup

  1. Plan the Cleanup

Choose a beach, park, or public space that needs cleaning. Get permission from local authorities, and gather supplies like gloves, trash bags, and recycling bins. Set a date and create a simple action plan.

  2. Build a Volunteer Team

Invite schools, local businesses, and community groups to join. Promote the event on social media and in local newsletters to encourage more participation.

  3. Make It Regular

Hold cleanups regularly—weekly or monthly—to keep the space clean and maintain community involvement.

  4. Celebrate and Inspire

Share the cleanup results—how much waste was collected and how many people joined. This will motivate others to participate and help spread the message of sustainability.

Revolutionizing Waste Management: Pune’s Waste Pickers Union

ree

Pune’s Kagad Kach Patra Kashtakari Panchayat (KKPKP) took a unique approach to waste management by empowering the city’s informal waste pickers. These waste pickers, who were once overlooked, became the heart of a major environmental transformation. The cooperative introduced a city-wide system to segregate waste and compost organic material, making recycling and diverting waste from overflowing landfills easier. What’s amazing about this initiative is that it not only tackled the city's waste problem but also created better job opportunities for waste pickers.  Their efforts were a win-win—reducing pollution, boosting recycling, and creating a more sustainable system for everyone.

How to Launch a Successful Segregation Campaign

  1. Start a Waste Segregation Campaign: Raise awareness in your neighbourhood or school about the importance of separating the waste into recyclables, compostables, and non-recyclables.

  2. Partner with Local Authorities and Waste Workers: Work with local waste management services and waste pickers to set up a system for collection and proper disposal.

  3. Monitor and Improve: Regularly check if the system is working smoothly and make adjustments as needed to keep things efficient.

These examples are proof that small, consistent efforts can create a massive ripple effect. Whether you’re planting trees, managing waste, or cleaning up your surroundings, every action matters.
